George Willis
GEORGE WILLIS has a penchant for exotic travel and adventure – he's faced off against a knife-wielding thief in Morocco, leapt out of a perfectly good plane over the Mojave Desert, walked amongst wild lions and elephants in Zimbabwe, and has twice stood in the shadow of the Moon. When he’s not wandering the Earth like Caine in Kung Fu, Mr. Willis enjoys writing. Currently he shares a home with a black cat that took up residence with him one Halloween. |
From Midnight Walk's reviews:
"Tired as I am of zombies I was fully captivated by the vivid The Measure Of A Man, a superb story where a ship full of hungry undead berths at the coast of a Zulu village."
Bookgeeks
"George Willis's "The Measure of a Man" brings a fresh slant to the zombie trope with his well-drawn and chilling period tale of ocean-going ghouls."
Creature Feature Tomb of Horror
"For anyone burnt out on the glut of zombies in popular fiction these days, George Willis' "The Measure of a Man" may be just the cure for your undead overload. Eschewing all sense of cliche, Willis crafts a marvelously imaginative South African-set tale in which a tribe of nineteenth-century Zulu warriors encounters a ship full of zombie invaders. Told from the POV of a young warrior-in-training who first spots the fog-enshrouded vessel from his mountain outpost, Willis' story at once refreshes the zombie sub-genre while staying true to its basic tenets. A first-rate example of how something old can be new again in capable hands."
Dark Scribe Magazine
"The Measure of a Man is an absolutely fabulous coming of age tale that is sure to please all you zombie lovers."
Famous Monsters of Filmland
"Another of my favorites from this anthology is The Measure of a Man by George Willis. This tale is set in South Africa and tells of Zulu warriors battling something they'd never encountered before - the undead! Besides the originality of the story, I really enjoyed how the lead character, a young Zulu in training, was developed."
Fatally Yours
"..."The Measure of a Man" was actually my favorite piece in the book. While the attackers were zombies in this case, it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things; the assault could have come from any foreign entity. What is important is the overarching theme of a young Zulu's coming-of-age during the battle, and all the responsibilities that come with it. The story was very well-written and is a fine example of this type of story."
Horror Drive-In
"When's the last time a good horror story employed the Zulu tribe? "The Measure of a Man" follows a young Zulu as he takes on the undead - a zombie story that is neither silly nor a Romero rip-off - definitely one of the high points here."
